GEMSTONE JEWELLERY CARE

Taking care of your jewellery has never been so easy: I am including some helpful information below: Should you wish to skip to my "quick and easy" recommendation please scroll to the bottom of the page

STORING YOUR STERLING SILVER JEWELLERY

Storing sterling silver in the open air and humidity for extended periods of time can cause it to tarnish quickly.  Tarnish first appears as a golden hue on sterling silver, then quickly turns to black.  This is a normal process that is caused by oxidization and moisture from air and sunshine.
To reduce tarnish and keep jewellery tarnish free, it is recommended that sterling silver jewellery be stored in an air-tight protective bag made of tarnish proof cloth or a plastic zip lock bag.  Although sterling silver jewellery is scratch resistant it isn't scratch proof, so it is recommended that jewellery be stored so that it isn't rubbing up against other articles, like in a loose drawer or jewellery box.
The natural oils from the skin help minimise the tarnishing of sterling silver items, so the more frequently a piece is worn, the less likely it is to tarnish.

CLEANING YOUR STERLING SILVER JEWELLERY

Sterling silver is a beautiful and durable metal that is made for everyday wear. Following a few basic use and care guidelines will ensure that your sterling silver items give you a lifetime of enjoyment. Please keep in mind that detergents and lotions can slowly erode the finish off gemstones and cause stones to become dull.

Copper, which is often used as an alloy in 925 sterling silver, reacts with oxygen too and produces its own tarnish, contributing ... the silver in your jewellery, possibly damaging it beyond repair, they may also cause pitting to your gemstones. ... Silver is a soft metal, so when cleaning your silver, you must be sure to take care.

Many of the sterling silver cleaners on the market today should not come in contact with most gemstones.  If the stone is porous, the cleaner may be absorbed by stone and impact its appearance immediately.  Even if the stone is not porous, the cleaner can dull the finish of the stone over time.

MY RECOMMENDATION

This method is suitable for both Fashion and Fine jewellery sold on my Website

Do not use Store bought jewellery cleaners for all the reasons mentioned above:

1. For a very tarnished piece a quick wash with dishwashing liquid and lukewarm
water in you hand, rinse with clean water, and dry with a soft towel.
2. Use a simple silver jewellery polishing cloth that will shine your silver to a
beautiful sparkling piece like the day you bought it. If you item is just looking dull
the first step can be skipped because all your item needs is a quick polish.
